The powertrain is the very reason for the existence of an automobile. The powertrain may be a traditional internal combustion engine that makes use of an engine control unit (ECU), transmission control unit (TCU), and powertrain control module (PCM). In a fully electric or even a hybrid vehicle the powertrain would consist of motor driver, battery chargers, rectifiers, and kinetic energy recovery systems. Hybrid vehicles, as their name implies, require elements from both types of drivetrains. These are some of the components that are placed under the most stress and exposed to harsh conditions. As such those components require extended levels of reliability.
