Derating Differences for Tantalum and Polymer (KO and AO)

Derating is a practice that is recommnded by capacitor manufacturers to their users to apply less than rated voltage to these parts in applications. The intent is to reduce the failures of these devices. The recommended derating for common solid electrolytic devices are:

  • Tantalum-MnO2: 50% of Rated Voltage
  • KO-CAP >16V: 20%
  • KO-CAP ≤10V: 10%
  • AO-CAP: No-Derating

These recommended deratings are a result of Surge Step Stress Testing (SSST) performed by KEMET.
