What is the difference between standard and Tin/Lead termination for surface mount ceramics?
The primary difference between standard (100% Matte-Tin) and Tin/Lead (Pb) terminations is the final plating.
Both termination options utilize a copper or silver frit system that is barrier plated with Nickel. The final termination layer is then plated over the nickel barrier layer.
Details about the layers used in a ceramic capacitor’s construction can be found in the series datasheet. For example, an image like this is found in the commercial X7R surface mount ceramic capacitor datasheet.
