Dielectric

Definition:

A dielectric is a non-conductive material used to store charge from an applied electric field. If a large enough field (or voltage) is applied, the dielectric will breakdown causing a short between the capacitor’s electrodes.
Examples are aluminum oxide (Al2O3), barium titanate (BaTiO3), polypropylene and tantalum pentoxide (Ta205).
